Bradford is a city built on water – quite literally. Not only is the city centre built right on top of Bradford Beck, but that water also powered the mills that brought Bradford to prominence during the Industrial Revolution, and its softness was ideal for washing the wool we traded during our time as the wool capital of the world.
Bradford is also a city built on creativity, collaboration, a DIY ethic and a buoyant spirit. Much like our underground city centre waterways, these invisible currents run through everything we do. Recently the city attracted more than £2.5million in long term funding from Arts Council England for arts project known as National Portfolio Organisations, showing just how much artistic talent there is in the city which is worthy of investment. There are also many individual artists, groups and larger organisations such as Bradford Council which are working year-round to improve and shout about the culture and creativity that runs through the streets here.
The Bradford Bubble Up is a weekend-long celebration of both our hidden water and our creative spirit. It will bring together all of the district’s National Portfolio Organisations and Bradford Council, as well as artists, makers and do-ers from all over the district.
Added to this will be support from regional and national organisations including the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Arts Council England, Artichoke and the Independent Street Arts Network and the National Science and Media Museum.
The aim of the Bubble Up is not only to have fun and highlight some of the brilliant work going on around Bradford all year round, but also to demonstrate how well we work together as a team. This paves the way for the creative regeneration of the city, as well as showing how the Bradford Business Improvement District could work.
On the surface, the Bubble Up weekend will be a family-friendly adventure around the centre of Bradford, but the undercurrent of the event is all about surging forward as a city, using all our talent and resources to shape an exciting future.
